# STEER template

Copy this block, replace what is in brackets and paste it into your AI tool. Use it for open tasks where judgment matters more than speed, or when the tool will take actions.

```
[STAKES] [Which decision will be made with this, who makes it and what is at risk].
[TASK] [The problem, not the procedure]. Work only from [file or sources]; if something needs data that isn't there, flag it.
[END STATE] [Shape and quality bar]. Finished means [who] can [do what] by reading only this.
[EDGES] [Decision rule: if you're torn between X and Y, do Z]. [What needs my permission]. [When you stop or say you're blocked].
[REVIEW] Before you give me the answer, check [specific criterion]. Mark what you inferred and what is stated explicitly.
```

## The edges, in three parts

1. What it does not do.
2. What needs your permission: sending, deleting, publishing, buying, touching shared systems.
3. When it stops: the condition that marks it as done, or as blocked.

Write them as decision rules ("pick three at most and tell me which ones you would bet on"), not prohibitions ("don't list all 10 topics"). Reserve ALWAYS and NEVER for what is non-negotiable.

## Before you send it

- Do the Stakes say which decision is made and who makes it?
- Does the Task state the problem, or dictate steps?
- Can you say what "finished" looks like?
- Is there at least one edge written as a decision rule?
- Does the Review ask for what was inferred to be labeled?
